How to Plant Baby Crocosmia?

I just dug up my neglected Crocosmia bed. The bulbs are very small. I do not know if this is too early, or the plants are just too crowded. They have been there for about 9 years. The biggest one is about 1 nickle coin size and the small ones are very tiny.

So how close should I plant the baby crocosmia plants? I think the normal distance is 4-6". Since this is very close, I'm thinking of digging long ditches, then plants the babies like planting peas. Should I still keep the 4-6" distance? Just wonder how long do I need to wait for the babies to bloom.
