That does not help me, because the tree rats are interested in newly dug up soil and will root around anyway, daffodils or not.

I normally lay a section of chicken wire over newly planted areas or spread a generous amount of bloodmeal on top of the area. Both methods work very well for me.

Last weekend I planted several new bulbs in my front yard that is fully exposed to rabbits and squirrels. I spread bloodmeal on top after the planting. To date, not a lick of soil has been disturbed. I don't know whether the type of bulbs I planted this time was a factor or not because I planted Colchicum and Allium.

Oh well, it was just a hopeful idea about planting daffs with crocus. So, it's newly dug areas that attract the little varmits. I'll keep that in mind. I read another thread on one of the forums that talked about one inch chicken wire being really helpful. I'll see where I can find it.

I used something similar to wire to discourage the squirrel digging up my crocus, (we don't have a whole lot of squirrels here) but he found the edge and dug underneath. I'll have to bend the wire down and push the whole thing into the ground a couple of inches. I've used blood meal to discourage pests years ago and it did work. Thanks for your input and hope you've found the answer to your own squirrel problem.

You could try to plant your bulbs during a time of year when the squirrels are well fed. Wait until some tree produces a big crop of something.

You could try coating the bulbs with powdered hot pepper and powdered onion.

Alium are another thing you can plant to discourage squirrels.
