Thanks for the reply. I think I will start them in the house around Feb, then put in a large pot for outside. I can then bring the pot back in the house (if they grow) in the fall.

The store had a sale, buy one get one 50% off. Had my grandson's with me & these were their suggestions. We'll see what happens.

No, I don't think so - ranunculus are short day bulbs and absolutely need to be forced into early growth in January/February. Bulbs sown in spring will simply not have enough time to make leaf and root mass for flowering before the increasing day length fails to initiate flowering. Sow now, keep on the dry side and force by adding water.

Camp, did you read the attached link? They are not winter hardy in most of the country and are most often sold in late winter for an early summer bloom.......if at all. They are especially difficult to grow in colder winter climates with hot summers - I wouldn't even bother attempting.

FWIW, many retail garden centers sell them as started, budded plants in spring. But typically as annuals :-)

Oh yes, I agree, GG - I keep mine in the greenhouse over winter (which also has the advantage of keeping them dry as well). In truth, I am not even that keen on them, only hanging on to them in the hope that some of them will revert back to a simpler bloom - preferably with far fewer petals. However, it is not only heat but light which directs the success of a growing venture - plants which are not in full leaf by the vernal equinox will just not initiate flower formation...so the plant needs to be encouraged to start into very early growth...which, I agree, is a big ask in those chilly northern climes - although I think for those who use lights - they will indeed do quite well and even survive as an indoor plant, much like Easter polyanthas.

As with euphorbia pulcherrinum (poinsettias) they are generally grown as annuals here too - another tricky light-dependent plant (and frustrating fail for me)..
