I have ordered from Brent and Beckys bulbs many times over the years, but not crinums. Yesterday I dug a huge clump so that I could share bulbs with some friends. It is a monster job, and the bulbs were enormous. Naturally, I sliced the biggest one about an inch on the side. I was afraid I had ruined it. So, I called my favorite bulb company, from whom I had not bought this particular bulb. And was told to leave a message for Brent himself. Within 30 minutes he called me back. Wow. I'm impressed!
The answer is to dust the wound with sulfur and let it dry for a few days before replanting. OR do a 10% Clorox solution wash on the wound. Dry. Replant. "They are tough. They will do fine." Music to my ears!
To which, I replied, "when this happens to daffodils, will this same procedure work?" And he said, that depends on the variety. Some are more forgiving than not, but yes, use the same procedure. Better yet, dig them as they are going dormant so you can see the leaves. :))
