I'm new to this one- had to dig and store today because it's not hardy here in zone 5.
I was hoping to see and smell my first bloom and at least see if i liked it but no- great foliage, a gazillion offsets, and NO bloom.
what should i do different next year to encourage a bloom? It had full sun and reg. watering. seemed happy and healthy....

The Tuberose never really goes completly dormand,it always has a green tip. Your problem is a common one when not enough warm summer weather is available. You could have dug it carefully and potted it and brought into the house and kept in an east window at household temperatures. I have had them bloom in January doing this and continuing to water and fertilize weekly. I remove the offsets before replanting. You can grow the offsets but they will take a couple of years to reach blooming size. Don't give up on them, you will just need to find what works for you. Al

that is baaad news. We had record heat this summer 43 days at 90 degrees. I don't know that it will be warm enough to suit this plant here. Anybody have these bloom in zone 5? I saw someone on ebay selling them in IA (next door)so I figured they'd work here..... karen

Mine did not bloom this year either and I live in Southeast Louisiana where it is plenty warm. I think mine are getting too much shade, but we have had really weird weather this year.

Mine didn't bloom either. I had read that if planted in pots, they would receive more warmth and bloom better, so I planted mine in a beautiful planter, in full sun and well watered. Still no bloom. :-(

I planted some in the ground and one in a pot last year. All grew foliage but only the one in the pot put up a bloom spike in late October. Eventually I was forced to bring it inside because of the cold weather and my cats thought batting that long spike around would be fun. You can fill in the blanks on what happened to the potted one. The ones that I planted I left in the ground even though they are supposidly hardy to only zone 8. This spring they surprisingly emerged. Maybe you all have, but I have never seen one, nor smelled one in person. I only tried them because of their reputation for fragrance. Well, they did bloom and I was disappointed. The flowers (I planted the double ones) had 4 white petals on the outside, but the petals on the inside were all discolored and the blooms never opened up much. Maybe that's the way they are supposed to be, but I was not impressed. As to fragrance, well I'd just had a Sanseviera bloom (Mother-in-laws Tongue) and compared to that enchanting perfume, this was nothing. I've bought more Sanseviera. They are bullet proof.

Mine bloomed in January this year. Seems to bloom whenever it feels like it. They smell so wonderful here. Tally HO!

Mine didn't bloom either this year. I KNOW it wasn't lack of heat. Am thinking of digging to see about offsets, but will try to exercise self-control until frost.

My face is red as I type this, but I had to pull three out. They were planted smackdab in the middle our paths we put in this weekend. They bloomed in July and looked like at least two wanted to repeat. I find myself robbing Peter to pay Paul in my garden this fall.

This is bad news. But they have to do well somewhere. I saw someone carry an armful the other day downtown. She must have just come from the farmers' market. I love the fragrance. I planted them years ago in the ground and they bloomed fine. What's the matter with them this year? Steveningen, nice to see you here on this forum.

We had a terrible invasion of thrips this year. It's always bad, but this year was worse. I thought maybe that was why the Tuberoses didn't open properly and the interior petals were discolored. As to the fragrance, it may be like so many other sensory things. Soil, temperature, water, climate may play a part on how the essential oils develop. They may have a wonderful fragrance elsewhere, or even here if conditions are to their liking.

I started fertilizing mine heavily with a bloom forumula beginning in June. They started blooming in August and are still blooming and we've had a cool summer with only a handful of days in the 90's. wanda

Wanda I have been doing the same thing. I fertilize weekly with a liquid fertilizer with a Phosphorus number of 52. I still have a few yet to send up a flower stem. Al

Could be our weather was off a bit this year. Mine didn't bloom either. They usually bloom about this time of the year in the ground. Maryl, I have always left mine in the ground and they have been in the ground here in zone 7a in OKC, for about 4 years now. They are like my white butterfly ginger - it blooms right around time for our first frost, which means sometimes the frost gets the bloom. But, they have always been quite fragrant (as is the ginger). I, too, have the double white tuberose. I bought them at HD and have never had any problems with them. They may need to be divided, too, because they have spread quite a bit. Susan

Susan when you do dig your tuberose I think you will be surprised to find that mass of leaves a foot in diameter will be from a solid sheet of bulbs fused together as solid as a stepping stone. Al

I planted mine both in the ground and in containers. They're in bloom right now, and the fragrance is very strong, a lot stronger than white ginger. Some of mine are planted in shade

Chaud - well, you're lucky you don't get the frost that we cooler zone folks do. Calistoga, can I chop up the solid mass, or will that destroy it? Susan

Mine didn't bloom either this year. I just dug mine up and they were A TON of offsets. I feel like a tuberose farmer. Not sure what to do with all of them.

I grew these for the first time this year and had both the singles and doubles bloom. Mine were planted in full sun in sandy soil and bloomed the beginning of Sept until last weekend, when I dug them up. We had less than 1/2 inch of rain between May and mid Sept. Did some hand watering but they didn't get too much. Now, can I store these as dry bulbs or do they have to be in the ground? Thanks. Susan |
