...that daffodils (except newly planted that fall) will break ground by December even in the coldest of autumns.

Every year I've lived in Maryland, my daffs will start showing tips of shoots before Christmas. They never grow much before March, but they do stick their noses out.

Even when I lived in Ohio, they often did, but if the ground was actually frozen that early, then no.

So for all the posts every year freaking out about early emerging daffodils, I've accepted it as normal and typical if they've been in the ground all summer.

Could be they're too shallow, but I don't think so since I've dug some up and they seem to be about 6" - 8" under dirt to the base of the bulb.
