Advice needed on root pruning pomegranate

Last spring I purchased around 30 pomegranate trees on clearance that were ready to be tossed in the trash at my local big-box store. They were all very root bound and had roots coming out of the bottom of the very small containers they were in. I temporarily up-potted them with the intention of trying to straighten out their roots this winter while they were dormant.

Well I am new to bare-rooting and root pruning. These roots are all over the place and going all crazy directions. Many of the larger roots are circling or they bend back at little further out from the base. I'm having a difficult time determining which to remove and how many might be too much at this time. Here are a few pictures of the one I am working on right now. Any suggestions?
