Container in Top of Rain Barrel

Posted by CharlieBoring 7 (My Page) on

I bought a "stone creations" rain barrel that has a 4 inch deep sunken in pot on top where plants can be grown. I am into edible landscaping so I am considering planting strawberries in the container. If strawberries are inappropriate I am looking for another type of flowering plant, even if it is not edible. I am considering phlox. Can anyone provide some suggestions?

Is there a hole at the bottom of the sunken pot for drainage? If not, don't expect anything to last too long unless you're very careful with the watering.

Do you want a permanent plant or don't mind replacing? You can always stick annual color in there and rotate. A geranium might look nice in the springtime.

There is a hole in the bottom and about 5 inches deep for the soil. Based upo the fact that the barrel will remain outside during the winter, I expect that annuals will be better.
