| I absolutely LOVE asparagus. I have always wanted to grow it but I have heard it takes a long time.
Can you grow asparagus in containers? Such as a 5 gal bucket? What about a 3 gal bucket?
I don't know the first thing about growing asparagus.
Please help because I am addicted to the stuff. |

| Well I'm not an expert on asparagus by any means but I'm growing some in a swc. So far so good, and I did nothing different than I would with tomatoes or peppers. I planted 6 bare root sets in a 18 gallon swc a couple weeks ago and so far about half of them have sprouted. I dont know if 6 will be too many or not for my swc's. I think you can grow just about anything in containers with the right soil mix (A1 mix adjusted for swc's), container size, good light exposure and fertilizer program. So I would say go for it and yes this stuff is addicting! Damon |

| I heard you have to wait like 2 or 3 years before you can eat the asparagus. I am really clueless about this vegetable...other than it tastes so good. Also when people talk about 'crowns' is that the root balls that are sold in the store? |

| The root balls are what I bought at the nursery. If I have to wait 2-3 years before I can eat it I'm gonna yank them, lol. Where did you hear about the 2-3 year thing, maybe thats from seed. Damon |

| Alamo 5000 I also wanted to try asparagus, so at the local big box store I bought 12 Mary Washington 2 year crowns, bought them home and then proceeded to do research, first I found that Mary Washington does not do so well in my zone, so after that I ordered some Jersey Supreme, better suited for my area ect. So here I had 12 crowns of Mary Washington going to rot in the bag, so just for kicks I planted them in 18inch wide by 24 inch deep pots tried to do a form of Al`s mix 5:1:1 well the little srouts took off they are 2 foot high and half the width of a pencil. I don`t plan on them really thriving for a long time as their roots like to go 6ft to 8ft but I just really needed to plant something and see what happens for myself. And if they don`t produce food the fern itself is pretty. This forum has a wealth of knowledge and everyone will say prepare a bed at least 24 inches deep and use the very best soil you can and mulch mulch mulch. plant 18inches apart and one person needs about 10 to 15 crowns. That is a very brief summary of what is needed for asparagus. I am in the planning stage for my bed that will have about 20 crowns, I will give them room to spread. I think pots will mean smaller spears in the long run. But as the people who KNOW asparagus I hope will chime in because I sure don`t want to come off sounding like I know what is best. I am so new to this and having fun trying to see if there are short cuts. Good luck :o) Deanna |

| Deanna described the growing pretty well. Here in northern California the very best asparagus is grown commercially in the delta area where levies have been built by farmers and the islands created with wonderful topsoil deposited by the river. Victoria Island asparagus is the best you can buy, shipped all over the world. Al |
