Proper way to fertilize and everbearing lime and Meyer lemon

Hello,
I have a meyer lemon and a lime tree that are everbearing in pots. I need to know what is the proper way to fertlize these since I have been told that I am not supposed to fertilize these trees when they have fruits on them, but if I wait until there is no fruit then I will rarely have a chance to fertilize them. Does anyone else have these type of trees and how do they fertilize them?
Thanks,

Citrus in containers is very common here in California, and the recommendation is to fertilize monthly year around. Most citrus will always have fruit on the tree. If citrus labeled fertilizer is available, use that, if not use an acid type as recommended for camellias or azaleas. Al

Hi marce,

I have never heard of that before for citrus. They are continual feeders and greedy at that, unless the root temps are maitained at a certain cold temperature, enough to impair function over a period of time.

How much you fertilize would depend on what kind of soil mix you are using in your pots.

If you are using one that holds water for a long period of time, or that is not porous, compacted, or that does not drain freely, such as a bagged soil, then I would fertilize according to instructions or what calistoga suggested. And then I would frequently flush the salts out to avoid root impairment..

But if it is in a mix that drains rapidly, then I would fertilize at every watering at 1/4 strength. All I need is Foliage Pro, with a capful of vinager in a gallon at each watering. This way you trees get a continual feed of nutrition. All plants take up nutrition all year long in ground, and if you withhold fertilizer on yours, epecially in a container, it will starve in no time.

Mike..:-)

This is great to know. I was given this information at the nursery I purchased them from, but now that I know I will start fertilizing right away. Thanks for the great information.
Does this also apply to repotting? Can I repot them with flowers or fruits on them or that is a no no?
Thanks again.

When you repot no doubt you will have fruit and or flowers on the tree. You should not have to repot more often than five years. I am assuming you are growing TRUE dwarf citrus in you containers. Al

There is no such thing as a no no...I repot when I want, even if it has fruit and flowers..Most of the time my citrus are in both stages, and If I waited for them to have just leaves, they would never get a repot..

:-)

Mike
