I'm going to be growing tomatoes, and a possibly a few melons. I'm in Zone 5, in upstate NY, and the containers will be in full sun. Is a darker color better? Will the soil get too hot during the day? Thanks.

White is best, but not translucent white - opaque white ...... followed by other pastel or light colors, If you can't find white containers, then try to make sure you shade them. Tomatoes like their roots under 85*. Al

I just got done painting my tomato pots white. They've been looking a bit sickly lately and I think it's from the black pots baking in the sun. I could feel the heat when I put my hand on them. Next time I'll just look for white pots.

OK, thanks. Much appreciated!

I grow mine in clay colored resin pots. The resin doesn't seem to absorb heat. Jane
