Best Pot for Below-Ground

Amarony

Being in the frigid north of the US here in South Dakota, I realize the new japanese maples I purchased will need to live in a pot year round. I have one maple that I'd like to put in my front landscaping, preferably below grade so it matches the height of the other plants to some degree. My initial thought is that a clay pot might work best for that placement below ground until winter. Anyone think that isn't a good idea or that another type of pot might be better? I do plan on Al's gritty mix for the soil if that makes any difference.
