Looks to be just a little bit larger than optimum, but if the price is right I don't see why you couldn't screen to gather the material between 1/16 and 1/4 inch.

Have you tried looking at a landscape supply? I have no trouble finding 1/4 inch granite, which when screened, works very well in the gritty mix and only costs about $6 a cubic foot. Al

to revive an old thread-- has anyone successfully used this? the granite in my local feed store is 16 dollars for 50lb so this would be much more affordable (and convenient since I can get it at Home Depot)

The size range is a bit wide so it might not really be feasible, but the pH is likely the big issue. I looked at it here in Chicago, and found it full of calcareous stone.

Have you searched for "Seed and Feed" stores? Those places cater to folks raising chickens, show and racing pigeons, etc., and always carry granite based grit. I get it for around $8 per 50# bag. The stuff I get is Mount Airy granite, from North Carolina (Gran-I-Grit) definitely closer to Boston.

thanks for the info! the feed store I got my first bag (Agway) at charged 16 dollars for 50lbs, and I can't go too far out of the city since I don't have a car.

hsw, I get all my supplies from Agway. I love Agway! Their regular pine bark mulch (NOT nuggets or mini nuggets) is awesome, and I frequently get 70ish % usage for gritty mix and 95% for 5-1-1 ( actually 100% - I mulch the pots with any larger than 1/2 pieces). They also carry TurfAce, and big bags of coarse pearlite too.

yeah, my problem is the gravel! they charge an arm and leg for it at the place I go to. Where are you located and what do they charge?

I'm in SouthCentral PA. I don't remember how much I paid for it, I haven't had to buy any in a few years.

The quickcrete stuff looks like it will work just fine. If you are worried about it being too big, just use a little less.

Better yet, screen it to size.

I would still caution anyone using generic gravel, about potential alkalinity. I work with this stuff, and see too much crushed limestone in it for me to use it for my potted plants.
