Is redwood bark an acceptable conifer bark for 5-1-1 or gritty mix?

Thanks

Kevin

Hey, Kevin!
No, redwood bark is not good structurally...too fibrous and hairy in most bagged products. I've never tried it in a container mix, so perhaps someone else can let us know how it worked. As a mulch, in the yard, it's great stuff.

Hey Josh.

Well, this isn't a bagged product. It would be in bulk and I'd be able to get a good look at it prior to purchase. I was just wondering because I was browsing on a local supplier's website and found out they had redwood bark. Just like to have options.

I'm wondering about that also. My DH is a woodcarver, so I have plenty of wood chips and sawdust I could use. He said there are a LOT of tannins in redwood.Weather that is good or not for soil I do not know! Nancy

Do not use wood chips or sawdust, Nancy.
The outer *BARK* of Pine and Fir trees is the choice material for container mixes.
