Best berries for sidewalk containers?

We'd like to plant berries in several large sidewalk containers on our block that children could pick and eat. Shrubs would be preferable to trees.

Anything offer plenty of fruit and yet hardy enough to withstand winter? While many berries have pricks that's not a dealbreaker.

I realize this isn't particularly practical but we want to do it in memory of a neighbor who passed away.

I'd say blueberries, but have no idea how well (or if) they would grow in containers.

Strawberries?

Blackberries are tough as old roots, but I wouldn't release small children on them without legal immunity and a couple of EMTs standing by.

How about a dwarf blueberry called Tophat? or try raspberry shortcake which is "thornless"... not sure about your weather... blueberries hate to dry out.

I wouldn't do this. Someone's liable to choke sooner or later. Or have an allergy.

I agree with Deeby. You don't want children pick fruits off of sidewalk pot and eat it unwashed with all kinds of pollution deposit on it. You should plant something that nobody messes with it , like barberry. hehe
