Possible to start lettuce in 5-1-1 mix?

I'm getting a late start (at least I think for 7b) for sowing lettuce and wondered if I can sow lettuce seeds in a 5-1-1 mix or if I need to start lettuce in a seed starting mix and then transplant to a larger container.

Also, can I grow lettuce varieties that are supposed to be slow bolting in the late spring and summer as long as I provide some shade during the hottest parts of the day? High today is supposed to be 74 degrees with a low of 56.

I sow mixed lettuce directly in the 5:1:1 every year. I use those long narrow deck planters - they're prolly about 3' long, 8-9" wide and about as deep as they are wide. I mix the seeds with about 1/4 cup of sand & sprinkle it over the top. I water daily until they start sprouting, then as needed. I use FP 9-3-6 as a fertilizer.
