Poppies in containers?

Hello, All.

I have tried for 2 years to grow poppies (the perennial kind) and have successfully sown them from seeds. But the Human-Woodchuck war that ensues is one I have to admit I can not win.

I just received bare-root poppies in the mail and am about to plant them in huge containers but for the life of me, there is scant information online. The most I can find is "put it in a pot, water and live happily ever after"

Is that really all? I hope someone here can help or even just confirm that it's really all it takes.

This is so funny that your post was the first I saw. I planted poppy seeds in a (very) small clay pot about 2 weeks ago and have been so excited that they're all beautiful little seedlings now! I'll have to majorly thin them out, but I'm thinking I can get one or two in there. I haven't done anything special.

I've hand no problem direct-sowing the seeds either. But as soon as they get to salad-size, the become woodchuck buffet. My solution was to grow them in pots--which I have not tried. That way I can move them around, at least.

The bare-root plants are now in a giant pot. I'm told they absolutely HATE being transplanted. Fingers crossed.
