Root trimming when re-potting

Is it good practice to always trim the roots of a plant before re-potting it? If so, how much should they be trimmed?

If the roots are really over grown, then you should trim them back. This is especially important if they are circling the pot.
You don't always have to trim the roots if they don't appear to be too thick and the new pot will have room for them. Some plants don't seem to mind the crowding. It is best to check the plant guide to see what is recommended.
