There is all this talk about having to screen the perlite for 511 mix due to dust /flourid.
Where can I buy the screens ?
Also is there a specific type/brans of perlite I should look for ?

Hi Ani,
You can buy insect screen at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace..where ever. You can also improvise and use collanders or strainers from the kitchen. You could purchase something prefabricated - I'm partial to wire mesh bins from the Container Store, for example. You could also buy hardware cloth, a 2"x4", a staple gun, and a few handles and build your own. It's really up to you. When your screening for dust, you want a 1/16" mesh. How you screen (or don't screen) the rest is up to you. There is plenty of debate about it on this forum.

As far as perlite goes, any brand is fine - just make sure it is coarse.

I think I found Greens mix the recommended pine bark fines. its nt composted however. would it work ?

I ask about the brand of perlite because i am not sure where to find the appropriate kind of perlite. -from what i have read here there are many different kinds- fine like sand, maybe treated with something etc., so want to get the right kind. I am afraid the growing season will be gone before I can gather all my ingredients...

PJ is correct....any brand is fine, as long as it is "coarse."
I personally use Sunshine Brand, which I find at Hydroponic shops.

I buy large bags of generic perlite at a farmer's supply. Cheaper and a bag lasts a long time. I've tried washing and screening it, and in the end, I didn't see any advantage to doing so. The amount of dust that ends up in the mix is negligible, so I don't bother any more.
