My outdoor containers have millions of microscopic flies...

...on the soil surface. I suspect that the compost/mulch is to blame. My plants are fine, but I want to plant more seeds for another crop and I worry that the flies will eat the seedlings.

Does anyone have a solution to getting rid of the flies and their larvae?

They are most likely to be fungus gnats. The best and safest way to get rid of them is with BT, a bacteria and one of the oldest organic pesticides. You can buy mosquito dunks and dissolve a small amount in water, then drench the soil. It kills the larva.

Fungus gnats are definitely a sign that your potting mix is too water retentive.
