My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Posted by meyermike_1micha 5 (My Page) on

I just wanted to share some pic with everyone of plants I am growing in the gritty mix and 5.1.1. mix.

And,

Thank Al for all his help, patients, and proven ideas!
Thanks for making it possible for me to finally succeed in container growing, something I struggled for years with.
All of the plants in the 5.1.1 are fed with, FP and lime mixed into soil, while the ones in the gritty mix that have gypsum in it, are watered with epsom salts, MG, and micros...
:-)

Desert Rose

Gardenia

Citrus trees and others

Different container plants and a few inground plants planted in a both mixes aroungd the yard

Plumeria and others

Poderosa lemon baby, variegated jade, jade and spider plants...

:-)

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Wow! They're gorgeous! I'm surprised at how small some of the pots seem; I guess some of these plants have compact root systems. What a relaxing place it must be to sit. I'd be sitting outside right now, but the sycamores have unleashed their fluffy seeds, and I'm sneezing.
I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the FoliagePro 3-1-2; I don't dare over-fertilize right now, as I started with the wrong stuff. I'd love to know Al's answer to my question of how finely divided organic fertilizer doesn't eventually make it out through the screen at the bottom. I won't use the alfalfa meal if it's going to clog things up.

Libbyc,
It took alot of friends here to pull my teeth and make me belive that less is best.
You don't need the alfalfa meal unless you really want to use it. I killed a many plant using wormcastings, bat guamo, crab shell, maunure, fish emulsions, and yes alfalfa meal in containers, in anything I had growing over 6 months in. Especially "houseplants and tropicals".
I hope you do well with yours!
This is the best forum anyone could learn from and we are fortunate to have it.
Happy spring!

meyermike_1micha: I would loosen the ties on that gardenia. They appear to have no space left for the trunk to enlarge. You don't want your gardenia "strangled."

Thanks for the advice greenhouser2. Have a nice day.

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Nice job, Mike. Some of the plants you are growing have proven themselves quite difficult for many to keep alive for any length of time.

While you may owe Al a little bit of credit for helping you build a strong container mix you owe yourself the bulk of the credit for the plants in your care.

Looking good, my friend.

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Justaguy2,

You should know that you are a part of my success too//:-)

Thankyou so much for everything you have taught over all this time too.
I know that I owe myself credit, but without the knowledge dispensed here, I would of still failed.

Thanks man!

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Well you are welcome, Mike, for whatever tiny contribution I made, but you are 'da man' growing your stuff so take a bow. I notice that you are one of those kind souls very quick to credit others and that's really cool, but don't just say you take a bow yourself, really do it.

You have gotten to the point where you see excellent results where you once struggled and that is a huge thing. You are now ready to help others as I see you doing.

You are good people Mike, and I am happy to 'know' you.

Oh my! This is my dream backyard. Enough said. ;)

You have such a beautiful set up there. How nice it must be to sit at anytime of the day to relax. Can I come visit!? ;)

I have a rather small backyard but this is what I envision for it. Hmm...maybe you can help me with more ideas.

oh oh oh...how long did it take your wisteria to grow? Ever since I was little i've dreamed of my backayrd being covered with this. I need to start early so that I can have my backyard looking like yours. :)

Way to go Mike!! :)

Ash

Aw....Thanks guys and gals!

Felix, how have you been? Missed you here! Isn't the gritty mix awsome once you get use to it...? I still have a lot to learn too..I don't think we ever stop learning!

our plants are certainly much happier, and they havn't a clue what we are doing to them..lol.
If they had brains, I am sure they would convey lots of gratitude..I suppose they do in action..:-)

Ash, no problem, just put in your backyard for a week, and I will come up with something...Thanks!

Nice to be missed. I have been around. Closing down the gardens, keeping a few things in my hoop house alive. Carry a few things down the cellar, like E.Ear, Agapanthus, canna ect.. Thinking about next spring. filix.

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Felix, arn't the hoop houses a BLESSING???!
I love mine! This is so fun.
I never realized you live in Maine..I pass through there alot since I only live an hour south..A beautiful state it is!

Jodik,

Thankyou, and you are sooo right! I appreciate these forums so much, especially this one! I have to constantly remind myself of how much Al and Justaguy have shown me, to never loose appreciation for two very good human beings!

Maine is beautiful. Hoop house's are a blessing. Even more than I thought they would be. Besides being able to start things early, and keep things going late. You can go out there in the middle of january. And on a sunny day it can be a nice warm sunny place to get away from the winter blues. filix.

 o
RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Pardak,

Thankyou so much! Most of those plants are in the gritty mix as mentioned...

I can't take all the credit, since non of it would of been possible if it hadn't been for a few members here, one in particular.:-)

 o
RE: I just might!

Felix......Now I just might keep mine outside..lol

I can envision myself sitting in there, with the fragrance of flowers, surrounded by humidity and warm, on a cold winters day...:-).

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

MeyerMike -- is that 4th picture a variegated clivia ? Beautiful ! Where did you get it ? I don't believe I've ever seen one of those offered anywhere ! Very awesome !

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Hey, Mike!
My sister's boyfriend was just gifted a Plumeria.
He's been keeping it on a covered porch at night, but the temps here are dropping into the 40°F's.
How low can these plants go?
Thanks!

Josh

 o
RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Hey Josh and castro_gardener,

That is a variegated clivia...Good guess...It is one of many I have..I LOVE them. Even without flowers they can bring soo much pleasure..Easy to care for too..
Thankyou!

Josh, how are you?

You are a pro at growing succulents!! I would say treat them as you would a, hummmm, Jade!
The difference is, that I have read that Jades can take a frost, but I can assure you, Plumeria, not so...Plumeria hate wet feet such as so.

If he leaves them outside till the 40's at night, they will be fine..
But one needs to make sure that just as jades, the soil is not wet at those temps..Dry is the key to survival for these plants to handle temps this cold...They will drop their leaves at this point, yellow up qickly, nothing to fear, and sort of go into a very slow growth, if at all, until the days get longer and warmer. Is this what is called dormancy? What happens to my trees for the winter is what I call dormancy..lol
It will survive cold temps, but the freeze point...

Mike..

RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

Oh my! what a great collection of plants you have, Mike. I also recognized that variegated Clivia. I just acquired a regular solid green leaf with orange flowers (it has bloomed once) and I have really enjoyed it. Have you seen the yellow-flowered ones? Those are gorgeous. I have just recently converted to Al's mix for my bulbs and am waiting to compare results. From looking at yours, I think I will be very pleased.

 o
RE: My plants in Al's gritty mix!

You plants will do great in this mix as so mine are doing!!

Sweet!

 o
