Wooden Planter Boxes and Drainage?

All the wooden planter boxes I have seen (or plans to build them) are solid on the bottom. And so my question is, how does that affect drainage. Do the boxes get water logged? Or are they actually better than pots with holes and keep more water in without it being too much for the plants?

They might be planning on you putting pots, or "window box liners" into those wooden boxes.
