Broccoli container size/shape

I started some broccoli seedlings in a large flower box (about 3 ft long, and about 8 inches deep). Now, I planted them there because it was what I had at the time, but I figured--or at least considered it a possibility--that the plants might be too large for that container. I read, though, that broccoli has shallow, wide roots. So, should I transplant them? I have a plant box that is about a foot deep, and about 1.5 x 3 ft wide/long. It was home to radishes, but those are gone now. How many broccoli seedlings can I expect to grow in a container that size? Also, how big should the seedlings be before attempting a transplant? Alternatively, have you ever grown broccoli in a smaller container like the flower box I am using? Would it be possible to grow any in this container? Thanks!
