how much fertilizer to use? help!

I normally use Osmocote for my container gardening; I make my own soil mix, and it's 2 cups per 30 gallon batch. I mix the Osmocote in when I make my soil.

90% of the veggies I grow love Osmocote.

Unfortunately it doesn't work well with peppers and eggplants, so I'm using a new fertilizer.

I'm using Vigoro which is 12-10-5. My first question is, is it suitable for container gardening (that is can I just mix it in when I make my soil?)

My 2nd question is, how much should I use? The 'recipe' I use says to use 2 cups for a 30 gallon batch; should I go by this or according to what the bag of fertilizer says on the back?

It says on the back as follows...

seeds...2 T per 5 square feet

vegetables....1 t per square foot; 1/4 cup per 10 square feet;
1 cup per 25 square feet

established plantings....(this is for tomatoes) 2 T per 5 square feet.

Unfortunately the square foot guidelines really don't tell me anything....so I could use clarification with that. Square feet doesn't really seem to translate with how much to use, because I need to know how much (in cups, ounces, and/or tablespoons) how much to use for a 30 gallon batch.
