Maple rootstock...

Can anybody please tell me what rootstock is used to graft the dissectums on?
I've got a 2inch red dissectum with a nasty grafting scar. I'm thinking of cutting it beneath the scar and let it grow again to use as a bonsai.
Will the rootstock be Acer palmatum...?
