carboard lining in planters

I heard of putting layers of cardboard inside of a planter pot to retain moisture. How many layers should I put in there?

Problem I have is that water pours right out of the drainage holes and then the soil dries out right away.

i have different size planters largest being 24" diameter by about 18" deep.

Not sure where you are considering putting the cardboard, but putting it at the bottom will do no good whatsoever. There's no way your mix would wick "up" the water. The good news is that you have a fast draining mix, which is a good thing. There are ways to increase water retention, like adding peat, or a peat based mix to your mix. What is the composition of your current mix?
