need help wih melons!

NOTE: I'm not growing them in the ground because our growing season is extremely short and I don't trust the weather here to plant them in the ground.

I've heard of the idea of growing melons in 5 gallon buckets.

The types of melons I have are both bush and vining.

However, if I grow them in melons, would I end up compensating the plant in the process? By this I mean, because they would be grown in smaller containers, would the fruit be smaller, due to less growing space being available for the melon?

This question is especially in regards to the vining varieties of melons I have, since I know they haven't been bred to grow in compact spaces like the bush type melons have.
