help with kiddy pool planters!

I have heard and researched the idea of kiddy pool planters. People have said you can only use them for shallow rooted crops because the depth of the pools are too shallow.

It's been suggested that using them to plant stuff like zucchini, cucumber, winter squash, melons....would be a bad idea because the depth is too shallow.

However i have an idea for them. If I were to cut the bottoms out, could I grow things like melons, cucumbers, and zucchini in them? Or would they still be too small?
