I'm planning to plant northern sea oats in 5 gallon containers. They will - hopefully! - provide a some nature and a green screen on my balcony. The balcony gets full morning light, the balcony is in full shade starting around noon. I really want these to grow full and rich, and remain as a golden fall and winter feature, but have read not to fertilize them (otherwise they'll flop).

Do you have any advice on how to get these grasses to thrive? Soil amendments? Is plant per 5 gallon right? Thank you in advance!
