5 Gallon Buckets

Hey all! I'm new here and looking for tips on easy indoor/5 gallon bucket gardening.

I'm in Middle Tennessee and working for an organization promoting fresh and local foods. We're helping out with a community festival in July and I thought it would be a good idea to have kids make a five gallon bucket (really just add soil, rocks, and seeds) they could take home and get some fresh vegetables out of.

I was hoping you guys would be able to give me some quick and easy tips about good soil to use, how to make the buckets, good/easy vegetables to grow in it, or any general tips that would be good to know.

do not add rocks to the bottom...thinking this will help drainage. Oddly, it does not. Many good threads here on container drainage and soil mixes. Determinate tomatoes might work nicely.

Any soilless container mix will do. As above poster said, suggest researching some of the 5 gal bucket threads. You can grow almost anything in them. Kids would like stuff like peas, beans, and carrots.
