I usually use garden netting - good quality nylon stuff that'll take some weight. I've even done ice box watermelon this way, using cheap nylon knee-highs as slings for the developing fruit. I put the stakes that support the netting closer together for the watermelon.

Ooops, I should have said, yes, anything that gets them up off the ground is fine. Its just most of the tomato cages I've seen that I didn't make myself out of concrete reinforcing wire are too small to do much supporting.
