Termites in containers!?

This morning I had to move my container garden to mow the grass. When I moved it, I noticed there were termites under several of the containers! The containers are either plastic or terracotta, so the only thing I can think is that they are eating the bark or wood chips in the potting mix.

Has anybody else seen this?

It's fairly common to find ants and/or termites in residence in our pots where they are indigenous.
