Wilting Hollyhock

JenWise

I have a very tall hollyhock that's been thriving and blooming beautifully in a clay pot, but an offshoot (or sucker? Is that the right term?) started wilting and shriveling, so I cut it off as I had done with smaller suckers before. That was yesterday, and today the whole plant is wilting and won't bounce back no matter how much I water it. I know it's not always ideal to heavily water plants, but this one droops every morning until I water it and then becomes taut and healthy again within minutes. I did see a large-ish white worm wiggling in the soil, and I squished it and noticed that the base of a sucker that I cut a few weeks ago is mushy and rotting. I have a feeling the wilting sucker was a sign of a parasite or bacteria in the soil...am I right, and if so, what can I do about it?
