Watering Regime

Hello, I have been doing a lot of research on how to grow peppers and I am wondering. How do I know when to water? I will be using Al's 5-1-1 mix in 10 gallon smart pots and I am in Zone 9.
Do I put my finger in the soil to see if it is dry? Or should I just do it twice a week and see how the plant reacts?

I am growing two plants each of several different peppers in 5-1-1 in 10-gallon smart pots in Southwest Ohio. The peppers were started indoors March 3 and planted out May 19. They all have blooms and some fruit. I find that they show me when they need water by a slight wilting. With hot sunny days, that has been every two or three days. Pay attention to when the leaves start to wilt and then time your next watering to a little before that is likely to happen.
