ALL of the soil. Also, due to how prone they are to rot, I'd suggest changing the turface and grit ratio to reduce moisture retention, meaning less turface more grit.

Take the soil off by soaking in a tub of water. Then take the hose and remove the rest of the soil.

Then you will have a bare rooted tree. Have your mix ready and add to your container.

My understanding is that you should try to remove as much of the old soil as possible from roots before pruning or transplanting. I did this earlier this spring when I moved trees from their old peat-based soils into the new 5-1-1 soils. You do not want to mix two different types of soil inside a container.

Laura: Those are excellent photos of how to do the root pruning and steps involved. Thanks for sharing. I need to get one of those nifty root pruning tools like you have. I currently use a pair of old, sharpened kitchen scissors lol...

Here is the desert rose and I also picked up an azalea as an experiment.

I'm in sw Florida so I'm curious how it fares.

Just let it acclimate for a week or so to the sun and you would be good to go!

I would water it a few times just to help the out the root system since you just repotted then let it go in a wet to dry cycle.
