Growing grass on balcony

Hello,
My husband and I are getting ready to move into an apartment with a private balcony, and I would love to build or buy a shallow container to house a little "yard" for our puppy.
I'm envisioning a shallow planter box, but I'm entirely new to growing anything.
I'm looking for tips on what type of soil, how to drain it, and what type of grass.

Use artificial grass. Your dog is going to pee on real grass and kill it. The latest artificial grass is pretty dang convincing, and you will be able to wash it to eliminate odors.

Yes, use artificial grass.

It is more environmentally friendly.

The additional weight on the balcony is not good, nor is the water. It would most likely leach through down to your neighbors below as well.

Your landlord would probably hate you.

Hm. I hadn't considered artificial grass just because the main purpose of the grass is for her to lay on (she loves sunbathing), but I might look into now, so thanks for your input.
