| This is my first time trying to grow watermelons in a container. Just wondering if anyone knows if the growth I'm showing in the picture is normal for 3 weeks after seeding. Thanks for any and all help.

From seed, to what you show there is very good in 3 weeks. Hopefully you will have a long growing season. probably 10-12 more weeks is needed for a ripe melon. I'm just setting melons now on my latest plant and hoping for the best.

@edweather. Hopefully it doesnt get too cool in September. From what I've read melons do not take kindly to dipping temperatures. I should have 10 more weeks of decent weather before it gets really chilly. How long before the vines appear?

That is the vine. Smaller ones will shoot off of that one, but that will be the main one and you should see flowers in about a week or so. Important to keep an eye out for the female flowers and hand pollinate them as soon as they open. I use a small soft paint brush (like the kind I used to paint models with when I was a kid) to transfer the pollen from the males to the females. The Males and females are easy to recognize. The males are just flowers, but the females are flowers with a little tiny watermelon just below it.

Ok. Thanks so much for that information. I was under the assumption that the bees would handle all of the pollination but I guess, for the best fruit, I will have to do the dirty work myself. Thanks again.

The bees 'might' get the job done, but you don't want to take any chances with your time frame.
