My container radish garden

| I have two of these grape crates that I thought would make a perfect container garden do to their large size and great drainage. I loaded this one with a mixture of good black dirt that I got from the woods behind my house, sand, and peatmoss. I planted several rows of radish seeds. It's only been a few days and they are already sprouting. Ideally I would've had this going weeks ago but I just thought of it.

Nice. Where did you find the grape crate? I have about everything else planted, but forgot about the radishes until the other day and decided I still had time here in zone 5, south central Indiana. I picked up a kitty litter tray at one of the $ stores and think I'm going to try using it. Those crates would be nice for a lot of different veggies.

The crates came from my uncle's commercial grape orchard. I have one more and I hope to put kholrabi in it. If it isn't to late to start them? I need it to quit raining first so I can go dig some dirt.

Hi , MS. I wanted to point out a couple of things. First, it really is very late for radishes, so if something doesn't work out, give timing a healthy dose of the blame instead of being too hard on yourself. I also wanted to mention that great drainage has nothing to do with the container. It's all about the soil. It doesn't matter if you're using containers with 1 or 100 holes - when the soil is done draining, the level of saturated soil at the bottom will be the same height in both. Good growing! Al

I tried a larger but similar container for radishes back in March, but the plants never produced beyond 2 sets of leaves (and No bulb). So in June, I pulled them all out. Daytime temps were about 50F, Night time was 40F and the soil was usually soggy due to rains. I have no idea why the 200 plus Cherry Belles didn't produce. Very disappointing.

When I used to live on the coast I had a customer who grew radish commercially. He owned 200 acres on the Monterey Bay just at the beach. The foggy summers allowed growing radish year around. The soil was almost pure sand. He planted 10 acres of radish every three weeks. Good radish must be grown fast and fast drainage is a must. Al
