| Hi, all. This may be my first time posting on this forum.
I have been accumulating large pots on my sidewalk, and am curious what chance they have of surviving the winter outdoors; this is an experiment, I have no intention of bringing these large, heavy pots into my little city rowhome over the winter. I also will not empty them/turn them upside down/wrap them in burlap - it's survival (or not) of the fittest. So far, the terra cotta (non-glazed) pots have survived one (very mild) winter outdoors, and the tall, white, glazed ceramic pots on either side of my front door have survived four or five winters. The green, blue and tan glazed ceramic pots in front of my fence are new, so we'll see how they do. I live on the border of Z 6 & 7, in a very protected, urban microclimate. What's been your experience with leaving ceramic pots (glazed, unglazed, terra-cotta, etc) outside over the winter? Thank you, Carrie

| All glazed pottery is not created equal. Most terra cotta, even with an exterior glaze, is likely to fracture from freezing. On the other hand, I have a few dozen hi-fired terra cotta bonsai training pots that are impervious to frost/freeze. Only highly vitrified (fired at very high temperatures) pottery can be counted on to remain fully intact through winter freezes. Al |
