spacing in planters

This is my 2nd year with my container garden. When planting, labels tell you how far apart in open ground. But what in containers? If i followed rules which generally is say 12" apart, i cant do this in a planter if i want a full display. Does cramming in pots make the plants grow bad? I know better to say put 1 plant per pot but if i want a nice full display can i put say 6 or 8 plants in 1 pot at 2 inch apart as long as there is depth and good drainage?

I would suggest planting specimen or crop type plants according to the labels. But if you're after display, the more the merrier. Just be vigilant with watering, fertilizing and controlling undesirable bugs.
