Landscape Fabric in Containers?

Has anyone used the black landscaping fabric in their containers?
What did you put on top of it? Mulch seems to be what's suggested.

Since the young lady above me has bird feeders, I've been trying to figure out a way to keep birdseed (and squirrels!!) out of my pots. I found some landscaping fabric at Dollar Tree yesterday (not expecting much in the way of quality) but it seemed to be an inexpensive way to try it out.

that sounds like a good idea to me- you mean to lay it across the pot top and staple it down on some edge points?

another thought would be cut out pieces of screening or small gauge chicken wire/hardware cloth?
