Trees/shrubs in 3x3' containers for privacy

I live in West TN where the summers get to 90 degrees and the winters get down to the teens (zone 7). I have a gas line easement running through my backyard, and I can't grow anything in the ground that gets taller than 6'. I am thinking about building 3x3x3' boxes with 2x4's and pallet wood and putting them along my back fence to grow trees or shrubs in them.

Can anyone recommend hardy plants that will tolerate container living through the seasons and a lot of sunlight? I don't have the ability to bring them indoors for winter. My first thought was dwarf crepe myrtles because they are very hardy, but I don't know if I want to attract more wasps than I already have. Help!

Almost any of the conifers will do well in containers .As will maples with enough shade.I live in your area and have grown Picea, Pinus, and many maples with no problem nor special care.It is however a must that the soil be free draining.Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response, cococo. The area where I'm planting will be full sun for most of the day.
