Saucers w/ gravel = better humidity?

You read about filing saucers with gravel, then filling with water to increase ambient humidity around the container.

Does it really make much of a difference or is it more a peace of mind thing?

Naturally we're assuming the pot bottom sits up on the gravel out of the sitting water.

Just wondering what you guys think.

Yes it does help raise the humidity in the immediate area. You will have to keep adding water as it evaporates very fast in low humidity desert areas. Al
