If one of the keys of drainage and air capacity in a container mix is uniform particle size then what components would be most similar to peat?

If one is to use a peat based mix then what can one do to maximize the drainage and air capacity?

The two components that came to my mind were perlite and sand (using both as close in size to peat as possible).

I understand that peat has a rather small particle size but if one is going to use it then how can one make the mix as friendly to plants as possible?
