| Hello all,
If you are in need of some bags of potting mix, potting soil and/or other bags of 'dirt' - try your local big box store. It has come to my attention that Lowe's and HD will sell you ripped/broken/damaged bags of 'dirt' for 50% off. I needed some bags for late season fill in work and told the sales clerk not to give me the broken bags - he told me that all of the broken bags sell for 50% off. I asked if this was only now and he said "No, anytime bags are ripped/broken/damaged - we let them go for half-price." Needless to say I purchased all of the bags I could - unless they looked really, really smaller than full bags.
I am not affiliated with ANY store or dealer and am NOT trying to sell anything to anyone. I only offer this info in case you need a bit of dirt for a discount!

If your talking bagged soil for the ground...Great If your talking for containers, no good.. If everyone made their own soiless mix such as taught here, then that junk, unbroken bags included, would be 50% off all the time..lol Thankyou dancinglemons! I am going to pic some up this weekend since I have some shrubs to plant in my backyard! In the ground they go... Mike..:-)

When I went to HD today and needed some soil, I asked them about this at the register. I saw some ripped bags earlier, and would have gotten some of those bags if they were half off. But, the person at the register denied this policy existed.

They don't give the 50% discount at our stores either.... otherwise, I would be ripping all of them, on the way up to the register :)

If you go when they first open the doors in the morning just as they're stocking shelves the bags they mark down are ONLY ones the employees have cut open with razor by mistake or ripped while moving/opening plastic wrapped pallets. Customers found out about 50% policy and started intentionally ripping bags (idiots) so stores around here limit the 50% deal to bags that employees who are stacking shelves themselves have wrapped in plastic and marked 50% off. Some days, if you're not one of first to claim 50% off bags, someone else has made arrangement with clerks to take all bags damaged by employees for that day. It's hit or miss but worth the savings when you can get it for temporary "growing on" potting mix or higher quality garden mixes. Got a huge bale of peat moss for 50% in June that's gone far in making mix. I'm a real sight in the parking lot of Lowe's or Home Depot trying to wrangle the unwieldy plastic wrapped "bags" from cart to trunk before 8 AM...LOL.

They offer the discount at my local lowes. And anyone doing it intentionally is nothing short of a shoplifter in my opinion. You cannot imagine the loss those stores have to absorb because of the INTENTIONAL things people do. Public companies or not, they hire locally. That kind of crap hurts the employees believe it or not. Not to mention, as a business owner, kinda P's me off to know that someone would do this to get a crumby discount.
