Pothos expert?-- I have a question

Pothos aren't the most exotic of houseplants, and surely not a temperamental one to grow. Still I love them for adding green to a room and I propagate them very easily.

My question is how do I keep my Pothos' leaves big and green? My pothos leaves turn very variegated with white and yellow streaks and new leaves are smaller than the big ones you see in stores.

I do know whiting of leaves can be a result of too much light but this happens even in dark areas of my apartment.

I currently use the gritty mix with recommended amount of lime, and fertilize regularly. I water every other week but have tried going a month between waterings and as little as a week.

What makes the Pothos in stores have those big green leaves and how can I keep them like that?

thanks!
