Why are my aster dying?!

Hello, Gardenweb folk. I bought some lovely aster for window boxes a couple of weeks ago. After making some holes for drainage, I stuck them in potting compost and allowed my kids to water them in. Two days later when they were looking just ever-so slightly unhappy, I figured they were drowning, so re-planted them with fresh compost and extra drainage holes. Since then they've declined slowly. The soil still feels fairly damp (I didn't remove the soggy stuff from around the roots), but they haven't been watered once since. I would assume that they are still drowning, or are now suffering from fungus as a result of their soggy start, but I added a third window box after this and kept them nice and dry... and they're dying too.

Is there any way to save them?!

I look forward to your expert replies!
