Bugs!!!

I have a beautiful collection of container plants on my deck. The past few days have been really hot and sticky. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but we have a huge number of little bugs ( infinitesimal, really) flying all around every night about dinner time. My hubby thinks the plants have attracted them. Do you think that's the case? Anyway to get rid of them, or at least decrease their numbers?

You first need to positively ID the pest. From there, you go to the least noxious treatment that will bring their population down to something you can tolerate. It might be that you're seeing ants taking to the air as part of a normal yearly cycle, or a hatch of some other insect totally unrelated to your plants. Are these insects feeding on your plants and ruining their appearance or sapping their vitality?

Al - Great questions. Actually, they don't seem to be bothering my plants, ( just us). I'm thinking that something is hatching - maybe mosquitoes? Do you think the water from my plants, like in the dishes under the plants, are attracting these bugs and causing them to breed there?

Could be. Perhaps fungus gnats or drain flies. Can you catch one and get it to pose for a picture?
