single-dwarf-tree containers? HL Walking Stick croaked

Hi folks,

I have some of the large aggregate containers in the front of our house--I have a beautiful red-bronze phormium in one, a summer-blooming daphne in another, and I *had* a fabulous Harry Lauder's Walking Stick (contorted filbert) in the biggest one, which is about 30" tall, 20" diameter. Unfortunately the poor dear tree has succumbed to the virus that had supposedly been eradicated in Oregon (even as it's growing its drupes for next year : ( )...so I'm looking for something that all those things going for it...fabulous winter shape, interesting blooms that come out on bare branches and make fantastic contrast...I'm so sad that it died. Does anyone have any ideas for a nice architectural dwarf tree hardy to maybe 6? I have a big a. palmatum sangokaku at the corner of the house in front so I don't want to have another one...for example, would a hinoki cypress work? Or another conifer? The container is very simple graduated cylinder--I like clean and modern. Thanks for any and all ideas.
