Container Gardening

Pot disintegrated. Root prune now?

I have a small young mulberry tree in a container. It's maybe 4 foot tall. I need to move it for the winter. When I tugged on the container, the container pretty much disintegrated. I'll need to repot. Not on this tree yet, but our leaves our just begining to turn brown now. Should I root prune now or just attempt to stuff it all in another pot? (A larger pot is not an option.)

I'd scoop up what you can, disturbing the roots as little as possible, over-winter in an unattached garage, and do the repot in the spring at the first hint of bud movement. Make a note of when that was & do the next repot 1-2 weeks earlier. Toss a little snow on the tree from time to time as insurance against the root mass drying out too much.
